Description:
This file contains the settings for Compiz Fusion to mimic Windows XP Pro (there are a few Vista settings in there like Window Previews and the Alt-Tab, but yeah...)

HowTo:
*) open Advanced Desktop Effects Settings (ccsm) from the preferences menu (in the main menu).
*) Click 'Preferences' on the bottom left.
*) Save a kitten from dying: select 'Flat-file Configuration Backend'
*) create a new profile with the '+' and name it something obvious ('Windows XP' for example...)
*) Click 'Import' and browse to the file... click 'Open' and the settings are live.
Last changelog:

Milestone: 2.0
All XP keys complete. All Vista plug-in settings complete. Additional "nice to have" keys from Vista incorporated.

MileStone: 1.5
Complete emulation of the Windows XP hotkeys + Vista plug-ins and settings enabled.

Current:
1.31 - Alt/Windows(Super)/Tab is now correct. Also enabled Dbus plug-in.
1.3 - Even more "lazy" tweaks. Hey, it's getting better. ^_^
1.2 - Removed unnecessary but
"non-cloning" settings.
1.1 - Additional Tweaks for Closer Emulation
1.01 - Initial Release

Great work. Hope you keep up the contributions. Some of my family and friends are reluctant to switch to Linux/KDE because they can't afford the time to hunt for network settings, printer configuration, control panel, etc.etc. The ASUS Eee PC netbook return rates that vendors experienced because Ubuntu was 'too much' from what people expected, says it all. Empirical evidence some of the previous commentators will have to show data to dispute. No one can claim Linux is better than Windoze if it can't prove that it can be windows, better than windows, i.e. no crashes etc.

this is great. I just got an old laptop and i am working on getting my parents to switch over to linux from windows, but my father wants to keep the windows like feel. so i will be combining this with other xp/vista themes(metacity/gtk/compiz/emerald) to make it windows friendly for him. thanks for the contribution.

why don't you run vista with quemu, better why don't you uninstall linux and install vista... Ok if you like windows why you don't go to a windows zone, linux is not windows thank god! Please stop trying make linux look like that sh... be original we don't need to copy, we need creativity if you don't have that please stay away.

Linux has its own strengths, and the fact that someone wants it to look like vista (because Vista's visual presentation is nice) is totally irrelevant and no skin off your back. Move on with your life.

I guess you missed the emerald themes I made and put up for your to download free of charge. Maybe you missed that I'm fronting a Linux documentation project. You must of also missed _WHY_ I uploaded the keys (look up a comment). You're not speaking with reason, you're speaking out in anger for no good reason. Maybe you're pissed because Windows has such a high market share. Maybe you hate Microsoft. Maybe you love Linux and think it's 34823904823490239048423 times "better." None of which have _ANYTHING_ to do with me uploading this. Don't leave crap comments on my creations. Piss off. You're not helping the community, you're hurting it.

Why I use Linux and not vista: 1. No £200 pounds from my pocket for an operating system that doesn't even do everything I want out of the box; 2. no extra £700 from my pocket buying a computer that it works with (removing the point in having installation CDs); 3. This is MY computer, not Microsoft's. I run it MY way, not there's, and I'm free to do what I need to do without going to the shop and forking out money for E.G. Photoshop or Dreamweaver. I think, "Why make linux look like vista when you can install vista" is the most stupid question anyone's ever asked.

You should switch "Shift Switcher" to <super>tab and have "Application Switching" on <alt>tab, this would make it more Vista like.

downhillgames

Fixed and the new profile is uploaded. Thanks very much ^_^ I don't use Vista, so it's hard for me to know these things specifically :) I've only seen one friend use it so far.

Where is some screen?

downhillgames

It's just settings... so it's whatever your desktop looks like, except acting like Windows XP. There is no graphical change from downloading and using this file, only window behavior -- It gives 1 desktop, disables a lot of "in the way" things for newbies like alt+left click for window grabbing, etc... it clones how the Windows XP desktop works (plus a few added things that Vista has that people like).

windsurfer619

Huh, oh. So it cripples your desktop?

downhillgames

not if you use apps that need those keys free (Photoshop, for example :-) ;) cute, tho :D

antisocialist

yes, i am sure many people using linux are also using photoshop during the same boot without a virtual box ;)

downhillgames

I guess you missed it... Wine now "supports" Photoshop up to CS2. I understand what you're trying to say, but get a clue; The more comfy we (Linux users) can make people who _depend on_ Photoshop, the better. ...please don't waste more of everyone's time by commenting back. If you don't agree, move on; like the world does without you.
