Description:
For Lucid

Open a terminal and type or copy and past:

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:gnomenu-team/ppa && sudo apt-get update

sudo apt-get install gnomenu

sorry the ppa is not avalible for maverick at this time, so do this for maverick!

Installation on Ubuntu MAVERICK.

copy and past these instructions to your text editor and save for future reference.

Save the GnoMenu file to downloads

Once it's downloaded, right-click the file and choose 'Extract Here' Or drag and drop to the open "Downloads" folder

Next you need to make sure the correct dependencies are all installed, so open a terminal (Applications >> Accessories >> Terminal) and type or copy and past: :

sudo apt-get install python python-xdg python-cairo python-gconf python-xlib deskbar-applet

Next, in the terminal you need to change in to the directory you extracted earlier. Type or copy and past:

cd ~/Downloads/gnomenu

now type or copy and past:

sudo make install

This will install GnoMenu, it comes with some themes installed by default. Once this is done, you'll be able to right-click on your panel and select 'Add to panel'. Select GnoMenu from the list, it'll add an icon to the panel, right-click the icon and choose 'Preferences'. From there you'll be able to install the menu themes you've downloaded and download others from the Internet.

double click the .tar.gz file that is in your downloads folder, when it opens drag the opened file to your downloads folder, and follow the rest of the instructions!

I saw this, and was all excited, and installed, but when I get down at the end it says this; sudo apt-get install gnomenu Reading package lists... Done Building dependency tree Reading state information... Done E: Unable to locate package gnomenu Is this just not updated for Maverick yet?

johnnyg

Sorry for any inconvenience! I have tested the .tar and "how to" in Maverick RC and it works for me.

whats a terminal?

twodogs

look at applications>accessories>terminal If you don't know what a terminal is, I would google it (linux terminal) and learn the basics first.

Installed Gnomenu on Debian testing tonight - seems to work well...but I don't see any icons anywhere on the menu(s). Just text on a white BG...active lines are similar except the text is red. What eff does GTK color selection have on the menu because the red comes from a GTK color scheme I setup using the new gcolor utility. Use GTK theme colors is UNCHECKED in the preferences. Those are the only problems I having so far.

johnnyg

Hmmm, Does this happen on all or different Themes, I don't use GTK color picker so have never ran into this issue.

frankzen

Happens on all the themes - I am gonna comment out the call in gtk-2.0 to include the color chooser stuff and we'll see what happens. I was too tired last night. But it still a nice job, and I'd encourage you to continue. It's about time Gnome looked as nice as some of those "other" OS's :)

Ok, wel, i installed it, HOWEVER, it doesn't give me the 'prefference' option to change things...what am i doing wrong and or how can i fix it?

johnnyg

Hi sorry It took so long to get back to you! OK, So you have installed gnomenu and you have added it to your task bar,or system tray, via right clicking on your task bar,or system tray, and add to panel, And now you have the gnomenu icon in your task bar,or system tray, And on right clicking the icon a window pop's up with preferences at the top, Or (no window pop's up?) and when you click on preferences, nothing happens no new preferences window opens ? But gnomenu other wise functions properly,?

wmatheney

Wondering you can help me. I just installed gnomenu as you instructed and everything shows it installed successfully, but it's not coming up as a choice when I right click the panel and choose Add New Items. I did install all of the dependencies as you recommended. Is there something i'm missing? Any help would be appreciated. Running: Mint7 Gloria xfce Thanks

johnnyg

have you rebooted and tried to bring it up again ?

wmatheney

Thanks for replying. I actually found that it won't load in xfce for some reason. I loaded the gnome environment and it appeared.

johnnyg

Hi yea after I answered you It came to me about gnomenu not being compatible with the xfce desktop, but I was on my way out and couldn't get back to you, but glad it worked out for you, Some times the little things are the ones that cause us the most confusion ! thanks for your interest.

technoshaun

If the user goes into the directory where they originally installed GnoMenu from they can use the command: sudo make uninstall Much better than deleting the usr/share/gnomenu as root. Safer too.

johnnyg

This is true, Thanks for your post!
