There are two files. One has the GIMP dog on it, one doesn't.

Install: name the splash file that you want 'gimp-splash.png' and put it in /usr/share/gimp/2.0/images, or wherever gimp is installed, replacing the original one. (you might want to rename the original one first, so it doesn't get replaced, i.e. lost)
