Save the file to any dir like ~/.gnome
Then open Applications->System->Configuration->Gnome Configuration Editor
Go to /apps/gnome-session/options/splash_screen
and point it to your dir

gconftool-2 --type=string --set /apps/gnome-session/options/splash_image FILENAME
If you use gqview you cat setup it as a command in preferences>editors.
just replace FILENAME with %f
