Description:
This is a wonderful Plymouth splash theme created by Andre "Osku" Schmidt, called Space Sunrise.

Here is a video of this splash theme:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qaSg2rRj4HQ&feature=related

I take no credit for this. It was all Andre "Osku" Schmidt. I merely found it extremely hard finding a link for it, so I decided to post it on here so others might benefit. However, I did use the original and make it using Inkscape so others won't have to. And this is why the font is the newest Ubuntu font.

Thus, if the creator has issues with my reposting of it, I'll be happy to remove it.

Enjoy.

FYI, if you are having issues, such as it:

* is in low res mode.
* has corrupted graphic
* is decent but can’t switch to virtual terminal or VT is horribly in low res mode
* is decent but the splash screen only appears for a brief 1-2 second ( you are missing the dots moving ), before that you only see a black/blank screen

To Install:

Deb file:

- Just double-click the deb file and click 'install'.

Tar file:

- Copy 'space-sunrise' folder to /lib/plymouth/themes
- Copy the file 'splash' into /etc/initramfs-tools/conf.d (Optional, for better buffer)

- Type in terminal:

sudo update-alternatives --install /lib/plymouth/themes/default.plymouth default.plymouth /lib/plymouth/themes/space-sunrise/space-sunrise.plymouth 200
sudo update-alternatives --config default.plymouth

- Choose the number to 'space-sunrise' in the options that pop up

sudo update-initramfs -u

Launchpad PPA:

In a terminal window, type the following:

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:inameiname/stable
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install plymouth-theme-space-sunrise
Last changelog:

1.1:

- Fixed an issue where installation fails if the plymouth theme, 'Ubuntu Sunrise' is also installed. Both debs happen to use the same 'splash' file and as such, you cannot overwrite a file that is part of another deb in a normal debian installation.

1.0:

- Deb now available
- Thanks goes to Spox5 for the idea

- Fix for those with issues now available
- Only use instead of deb or tar if having trouble with it
- Thanks to MerlinW for the idea

Great theme! Just one question: is the wheel supposed to stop after ~⅓ of a full turn? When I boot my machine, the splash theme appears, the wheel rises and turns, but after a very short time it stops turning while booting continues.

I am afraid I do not use this theme anymore, as I find this adaptation of this one even cooler: http://gnome-look.org/content/show.php/Earth+Sunrise+Plymouth+Theme?content=137171. However, from what I remember, and from that video link of it I have above, it seems it should keep turning the entire time. I may be wrong though, and if it is not for you, and that is the only issue, I would not worry about it.

It's a beautiful theme, great job in there, I love it!

Thanks goes to Andre "Osku" Schmidt, as I didn't make it. But yes, it's an excellent Plymouth theme.

jechem

this is a new plymouth manager with a GUI which enables you to change or create your own splash. http://jechem.blogspot.com/2010/11/cool-plymouth-manager-for-ubuntu-with.html

Interesting...thanks for the link. I wasn't aware of this.

Sorry for asking, but how do I remove this theme? Installed with deb for ubuntu 10.04

inameiname

No worries. Just open a terminal window, and: sudo apt-get remove space-sunrise

Wonderful theme! Thanx

You're welcome.

I can't seem to get the .tar file. When I click the download link (either of 3 on the page) all I get are advertising pages for various products. Is there another link I can use (the .deb isn't working for me, either).

barkhat

Scratch that comment. I was able to get it using Firefox (instead of Google Chrome). For some reason Chrome was shooting past the link page straight to the ads. Thanks!

inameiname

Strange. Well, glad you got it downloaded, and hopefully working.

barkhat

Well...sort of working. It does come up but it's all kind of black and white. I tried to follow the information on the link you provided but I'm too much a newbie to really understand what to do.

Try the fix I just added. It's added from Ubuntu-Sunrise's fix, by MerlinW. Supposed to automatically input all that is needed to fix the issue.

barkhat

Well, thanks for adding "the fix." Assuming is installed the same way you install the .tar file, it did not work for me, unfortunately. Still have black and white when it comes up. Oh, well...it's certainly nice in theory. Is there a way to return to the original I had before trying this splash?

inameiname

Doh! Shame it didn't work. It was a fix I basically just copied from the fix for Ubuntu-Sunrise and changed a few words for Space-Sunrise. It's installed differently than the original tar file, as there is an install and an uninstall script. You just have to make sure both are marked as executable. You double click on the install to install, and to remove, double click on the uninstall. You can also do the same through the terminal, but opening it and running it through the terminal, so you can see the readout. Hope that helps.

awesome!!! make some more...

inameiname

Oh, well, I did not make this one. Andre "Osku" Schmidt did. But I am curious what other interesting splashes are possible with Plymouth. Hopefully Ubuntu will fix all the Plymouth bugs that seem to be out now to allow for some even cooler themes.
