Description: This is a Usplash created to match my Clearlooks/Murrine/Nodoka/Compact-Colors themes. I borrowed some inspiration from the fedora splash, and added clearlooks progressbars.
It's my first Usplash theme. Please report any problems!
As usual, there are brave (blue), human (orange), wise (green), wine (red) and dark color variations!
It's a modification of the default usplash in Ubuntu Hardy. It supports the following resolutions: 640x480 800x480 800x600 1024x600 1024x768 1280x800 1280x1024 1440x900 1680x1050 1920x1200.
Note: Screenshot previews are just pasted together in gimp.
I've included packages for i386, x64 and the sources for those that have other architectures and need to compile it.
I've only tested it in Ubuntu Hardy, but I imagine it should work with other distros.
Instalation This is the most user-friendly method:
sudo apt-get install startupmanager
Add any of the *-ubuntu.so files under manage usplash themes. Make sure you choose the right one for your pc;s architecture. If you don't use widescreen, select your optimal resolution in startupmanager and you're done. If you do use widescreen, read below:
Widescreen Startup Manager doesn't support widescreen, so after you have selected the desired theme, do the following:
**If you have a widescreen display, and hwinfo does not output widescreen resolutions, this means your video card does not support widescreen framebuffers at boot. If so, try using a newer video card.
Please: If you must vote down, or if there is something you dislike about the theme, let me know so I can work harder on improving it!Last changelog:

It's likely. From what I've seen, xsplash can just specify a wallpaper and use that instead. Maybe once I figure out the new GDM, I can upgrade arc-colors to gdm+xsplash.
I compiled the dark-ubuntu for Ibex and used startupmanager for my widescreen laptop. It works fine except the image is too wide and tall for the screen. The text for decrypting the drive is at the very bottom of the screen.

Unfortunately, the whole *-Colors theme is not quite consistent, since Usplash background differs from that of GDM and desktop. I'm looking forward to the unified look of GDM, Usplash and the desktop....

Tho, I found usplash to be too much of a hassle, so I've switched to Splashy (http://splashy.alioth.debian.org).
Any chance that you could port this theme to a Splashy comparable theme?
I would give splashy support, but frankly I've no knowledge of working with that system. Since you did manage to figure it out, feel free to upload your version and contribute it with others!
This may be common knowledge to some, but I used this usplash on hardy, and it worked great, but wouldn't work at all on Intrepid. All I had to do was recompile it from source, though, and the new .so file worked just fine with the instructions given. The only trick that I ran into was, I didn't know about libusplash-dev. If you upgrade to Intrepid, and you need to compile this from source, make sure you get that library from Synaptic or apt-get.
You're right. If you're using intrepid you need to install libusplash-dev and type make in the "Sources" to create the .so file.
I'll probably get around to uploading binaries compatible with Intrepid once it's out officially.

If not I'll just compile my own. I wanted to add the blue status bar to the black theme anyways ;)

I tried swapping the blue bar pngs (all 4) to the dark source file folder and making new .so's. They compiled fine and it runs on Intrepid, but the bar looks like a corrupted orange - certainly not blue nor black.
Is there something I have to do to get blue progress bars on the black usplash theme? It looks like simply swapping pngs and recompiling might not be enough.
This is my first time messing with USplash, by the way.

No intrepid binaries yet. I think I'm going to update the code to the latest just to make sure it works best with Intrepid and that may take a while.
Also, about making your own usplash - it's not that easy. Usplash is hell, because you have to make sure all the images have the same color indexes, etc. Try going to the first page of comments, I posted a little guide on modifying/creating Usplash themes.
What music player do you mean? I don't have any put on the screenshots, although If you ask what I use, I've always used Banshee Media Player.

I installed Startup Manager. Then I added the i386 buntu.so files to SUMgr then I installed hwinfo.
I was unable to get any hwinfo output. I was interrupted and had to shut down the computer at this point.
BUT- I had a new shutdown screen then.
On restart I had a dark blue bar across the new usplash screen bottom.
The next restart was normal with the new screen.
I have an IBM T42, 1024x768 display. Grub menu says 640x480 8 bits.

The instructions are meant for widescreen setup only, if you have a 4:3 resolution it's best if you just choose that resolution in startup manager's settings. Try selecting 1024x768 24 bits for best quality.
Yes, I know what you mean. One of my computers has a 6600GT and it doesn't support widescreen framebuffers either. I don't know if there is a solution. The Nvidia drivers allow for aspect ratio GPU scaling (adding black bars to the sides), perhaps something similar exists for framebuffers.

I'm eager to try out your splash screens, but I have a AMD 64 bit Live processor; and I'm using the 32 bit version of Ubuntu. Should I use the x64 version or the i386 version?
Usplash is a software project in the Ubuntu community. Historically, scrolling text "verbose mode" has typically appeared on Linux computers during boot. Usplash replaces the scrolling-text screens with a graphical splash screen. Wikipedia

Could we be seeing Karmic-Colors XSplash ?? we will have to find out ; )

Scratch that, XSplash is just too unstable/buggy to warrant the time creating a theme for it.

great work, looks great, it just makes me sad that the Nvidia 7600GS doesnt support widescreen framebuffers so it looks stretched :(

not only does the splash look great, your howto for installing it and making it work with startupmanager was incredibly helpful

I found out that I should use the 32bit (i386) for Ubuntu 32 bit on AMD64. Your splashes look great!
