Description:
XP like login for Ubuntu. Best used with XP_Ubuntu Splash screen and the Luna eXPerience - Blue desktop theme. I used the buttons and logon graphic from the Windoze Professional GDM theme by HaNieL.

Some users may not like the M$ look but I use it at work to prevent a lot of questions. If it looks like M$ it must be, right?
Last changelog:

Version 1.0
The XP_Ubuntu and XP_Debian themes have now been merged into this one theme with interchangeable graphics. The XP_Debian theme has been removed from the site.

Removed Distribution logo from the background and made the Ubuntu and Debian logos separate and changeable by editing the XML file.

Removed active - inactive button images and replaced them with tint properties. This reduces the overall number of files needed for the theme.

Beta Update
Complete rewrite of the XML file to improve layout for the timed login text, caps lock text, usename/password error text and all buttons.

Added an OK button next to the username/password prompt.

Repositioned and added the proper show modes for the shutdown, suspend, and options buttons.

Added the ability to create your own logo image (image to the left of the Username: prompt). Edit the logo_src.png and add you own 48x48 image to it and save it as logo.png. Of if you want you can create your own 54x54 logo image and name it as logo.png. The Logo image contained in the archive is Tux.

Like or dislike Windows all you want, but things like this serve a purpose and it's well made. Fanboi votes shouldn't count.

I have to say first off good job you have captured the XP style very good... But I did not like it in XP and I dont really want my linux box to remind me of XP! :)

jokker

That's all I need to say ! How come people vote for that crap ?

lol hot

barteks7

nice, but imho it is wasting time only, to make next ubuntu/linux windows imitation ;) don't beat.

em007a

I don't happen to like XP, but I have to say it was very nicely done. Looking forward to the next one!

I'm pretty much done with changes to this theme. The original intent of the XP_ line of themes were to provide me with a learning tool for GDM Themes. If anyone would like to see a version of this theme with a user-list please let me know. If there is enough interest I'll add a version with the user-list.

beatbill

Yes, I'd like to have user_list enabled for this theme. Better yet to make the face list also looks similar to M$ XP style. I understand that many people hate M$ and object any action to make Linux looks like M$ crap. I am one of them. But your descriptions say it all: to make your Linux computer at work looks like XP will prevent a lots of questions. And that is the point of this theme. Well done! You can customize your linux computer at home to your heart, can't you. But work is work. In some situations you don't want your office mates to think you as an alien.

debiani386

i think this GDM theme looks nice.

I downloaded it and tryed it just to see how it works and wow! It's incredible how you managed to simulate an exact feeling of Windows XP! This even works like the XP login! Very nice, guess there's a good coding in it too!

darkmaster171280

Nice, wonder if this violates MS copyrights... you know, the graphic you used are those designed by Windows, with no mercy. unfortunately, not everyone leaves in the home of freedows :D! I don't care about your eventual legal issues, aniway, this is a good cameleon transformation for GDM and i once more proves how powerful and customizable Linux is. Nice work!

finchair

There is probably enough variation to dispute an M$ claim. It's one of those almost but not quite the same situations. A lot like M$ has done with apple products, almost the same but not quite.

Nim

Your work is good, but Linux is not Windows and should not look like it.

corrosivemisery

I think this comment is worthless and for me, makes more case for us to get some moderation on this site. The site is an artistic forum, if someone wants to make their Linux distro of choice look like Windows, more power to em' and they should be welcome to post just as much as Ubuntu fan boys do. Getting kinda tired of poor comments under the "hey! this is a Linux site!" crap. <from below> There is plenty of variation in this from the default XP welcome screen to make it unworthy of violation. M$ can't sue for supposed Linux patent violations let alone someone's take on the XP log on screen.

debiani386

To some people who are new to ubuntu, having a distro that looks like XP can be very helpful to them especially since this may be there first time using ubuntu, let alone a linux distro. The GNOME interface may be confusing to some (since it looks a lot different then windows). In gnome, there is no start button and lots of windows users who are just switching over may get confused by this. Furthermore, There are probably some people out there who like the look of Windows, but hate the way that windows performs.

rpgmaker

Is a good work. If you make a Debian version wouldn't be necessary to have the name 'debian' in the ubuntu version, right?

DekuNuts

I would not want my linux desktop to look like windows, but my little sister does, so thanks, it's good work.

mathieu147

I personnaly don't like my Linux computer to look like MSWindows, but everyone can admit your work is good.

Philo-Bedoe

Could you do the same to Debian Distribution without Ubuntu-logo ?? thank you ^^

finchair

I'll work on it, will hopefully have it up sometime tonight. Thanks

kwarc

I like it :)

robertodark

this sucks

finchair

Like I said, not everyone will like it.

For applying GDM themes, there is this tool:

Note Ubuntu uses LightDM, so you would need to switch to GDM first to use GDM themes:
