every distribution come with an mp3 player called XMMS: it is the "standard de facto" for linux. It is compatible with winamp skins and doesn't need wine to work! www.xmms.org
For decompressing files I use the commandline tools but for creating a zip or tar.gz file I use winzip. It works much faster then the command line tools (and I am used to it from my windows past). I tried karchiver a long time ago (> 1 year) and it had some problems. I guess these are fixed now.
Winamp works also fine but I don't use it that much. (only when taking screenshots :).

Do you use winamp with wine? or do you mean the linux (alpha?) version? Or xmms with winamp skins? I don't understand that. sorry *g
Everything runs in wine. The alpha version of winamp for Linux doesn't work here...

But why are you using Winamp under Wine, when XMMS used Winamp skins and is a native X application?
These things just make my windows fiends jealous :-)
