In both I just used the Gradient tool to create the colors. Tweaked the brightness and contrast.
Then under filters > distorts there is iWarp. I just use the Move, Swirl CW, and Swirl CCW. Its in a lot of fire tutorials and is quite easy and effective.

I heard the fire thing is a really simple to use feature in the current Gimp. Is that right?
