Newbie question, but was this created with Gimp? I always hear about Gimp, but I haven't used it yet. I figure making a wallpaper would be a good thing to start with. Were any special plugins or whatever needed for this?

Yes this is all made with Gimp alone. You don't need any particular plugin just plain Gimp that comes by defect with your distro.
