1) download the tar from this content
2) download the images and readme file from http://www.kde-look.org/content/show.php?content=49765
** INSTALL **
1) emerge layman and edit make.conf file;
2) go into layman directory and untar the package;
3) in konsole go into layman directory and type "ebuild kopete-3.5.5-r2.ebuild digest";
4) now emerge kopete
USE THIS VERSION ONLY IF YOU HAVE EMERGE KOPETE SPLIT EBUILD

I have not downloaded and used the ebuild that you have posted, yet... But it seems that your install technique is incorrect. While it would work layman is for external overlays. The correct technique would be to hand create an overlay and add the overlay to the make.conf file. There is no need to mess with layman for this. That is if I understand the concepts of layman...
