This is probably the most marvellous space shot I've ever seen: 423.4 Megapixels, 479 MB file in TIFF format, crisp, sharp, clean and so beautiful.
I've taken five different sections of the original, made circular panoramas and played with colors and contrast in Photoshop.
Every skydome is 4096x2048 and almost 12 MB weighty: that could be too much for certain video cards, so you'll probably have to scale down to use.
In the screenshots you can see how they'll look on your desktop, a scaled down sample of each image and a full resolution crop of the same.
Let me know if you're experiencing troubles.Last changelog:
Seems that you like this collection, don't you?
Actually, I think that this kind of skydome fits pretty well on everybody's desktop, so I hope that you'll be pleased to welcome this little addition of 4 new skydomes that I made from
This time the source images are from the Orion Nebula (324 Megapixels photo) and the Groth Region (224 Megapixels photo), I combined the two images, manipulated the colors and made some equirectangular views out of the result.
I find these last works to be better than the first submissions. Maybe sometime I'll give a refresh to the Carina skydomes too...
I've tried unsuccesfully to setup my cube so that I get the same effect i see on your snapshot.
I still can't get rid of the horizon line nor get that perfect black shiny bottom. Can you share your settings in your compiz fusion "Cube Reflection" menu.
Awesome skydomes btw!
It suffice to go to Cube Reflection plugin and adjust the Intensity of the reflection.
Intensity=0,00 => You only see the reflection plane under the cube, solid color and no reflection.
Intensity=1,00 => You only see the reflection, almost as bright as the cube itself, the plane is almost invisible.
Intensity=0,50 => The minimum value to get rid of the horizon line.
Compiz's default is 0,40, so the horizon is visible. I don't remember which value I used for the screenshot you see, but for sure it was major than 0,50.
Thanks for your magnificent work! I'm actually using Wall instead of Cube (since several months ago), but these amazing skydomes are tempting me to switch back... :)
Nice Hi-Def images. Which to choose lol? I'm using no.2 for now.
To set the image goto Desktop Cube->Appearance->Skydome then browse for file.
I figured out that if I change the Intensity slider in Cube Reflection from default 0.4 to 0.85 it gets rid of the shelf look on the horizon and just has the reflection on top of the skydome.

Just rename it to "something.png". Or instead of right click and save the file, try to open the link and then save the image.

Suffice to set reflection intensity to 0.5 to get rid of the horizon :) Glad you like them ;)
