One interesting direction would be to overlay 2-3 meters for each direction on top of eachother and have maximum numbers for last 2-5 minutes stay on the underlying meters.
Since putting in graphical history is against the "Simple" part, and having just the last usage value may be deceiving, having historical maximums on the "same" meter would be a good middle ground.
The closes analogy I can give if that of some fancy equalizers, that keep one bar floating for peaks.
