nice icon pack. but when i unpack the icons in the folder you suggested nothing happens upon restarting dropbox. I still see the original icons in the notification area. plz help.
That's probably because you didn't overwrite the original ones. If you go into ~/dropbox-dist/icons you'll see that the original ones are still there, and the new ones are called idle(1).png and such.
Either delete all the icons in the folder and re-extract the new ones into it, or rename the icons so that the new ones are just called idle.png, busy.png, x.png etc.
Upon restarting it turns out I did have the same problem. Following the instructions you linked to (with some minor differences, since I'm not running the one from the repos) solved the problem.
The "sleep" value I used might not work for everybody so I increased it (it depends on how fast things load and how many apps you set to start when you power your computer)...
Anyway, I'm glad it worked.
I'm not sure what's causing this, but it happens for me... and also I had some comments regarding this. Not only the new icons don't show up, but upon computer restart Dropbox doesn't even use the AppIndicator anymore :|

Huh. That's odd. I never had any problems with just replacing the icons and restarting dropbox.

Tried it now, and I didn't have a problem. Maybe it's because I uninstalled the old version of Dropbox.
