so this will replace the rectangle in the corner, with the ubuntu-like rounded rectangle in the corner? that's it? i mean, i want to be sure what i'm installing. sounds good, tho, i find the rectangles kind of ugly.
It'll replace the ugly standard rectangle in the corner with a rounded rectangle that can be in the top, middle or bottom on the right (I think that was all it supported) that can't and won't support buttons and which won't stack, but which will become transparent and not interfere with mouse clicks when you hover over it.
I've been using it for ages from one of the openSUSE Build Service repos (a semi-official XFCE one) and it has an issue with quick refreshes, but is generally an improvement over the default and I don't miss the lack of buttons.
It's not that buttons don't work, it's that it is intended to be ever so slightly different (i.e. only for notifications) and so they have no plans of ever putting buttons on. At least that's what I read. Besides, its behaviour of going transparent and not accepting clicks so that it doesn't get in your way would kinda interfere with the whole button thing ;) So far I've not missed the lack of buttons.
oh, yeah, good point. i only use the button hen this one song i don't really like comes on banshee, and i hit skip. i guess i can just remove the song.
yeah, that sounds kinda dumb, i should've taken it out a long time ago. when i get on my opensuse pc i think i'll install this.
Yes, it's just the default GNOME notification-daemon. I'm not sure how it works with KDE.
It supports extended configuration through the file ~/.notify-osd which can have the following values (so you can customize it to fit your theme):

I have also compiled a small tool for Fedora 13 to generate this configs... It does run ok on openSUSE. You can find it here:

So you can really tweak notify-osd to fit your theme ;) Which Ubuntu doesn't offer! I also advice you to use 'Dynamic' and not Fixed.
There's two files there, one is source (with Modified Makefile to compile on Fedora 13, probably won't work on openSUSE, Makefile needs to be hacked again) and there's a second one which has only 1 file (NotifyOSDConfiguration) I believe. Rename it to notifyconf.
Since I'm assuming you are on openSUSE copy the file into the the 'bin' folder on your home, fire up a terminal and type 'notifyconf' and it should pop out :)
Be carefull selecting apply will write the ~/.notify-osd file.
i can't find what you speak of. there is "notify-osd-0.9.29.tar.bz2"
"notify-osd-leolik.patch"
and "notify-osd.spec" under 32 bit
i got the tar.bz2 and it had the make files, and stuff, can't find the file you said.

One or two days I have a RPM for openSUSE for the configuration util.
