This is my first suggestion (edited from an original made by uga). No text but for the logo.

I think that a vertical alignment of the splash screen is interesting and very aesteticly pleasing, but to do this with the current splash system (the one with the blinking icons at the bottom), we need the pixmap to be 400 pixels wide. That is the reason for the 550px height.
