I find this theme useful for introducing new users to linux. In a corporate environment familiarity is necessary.

it might be very usual for windows user who are trying to switch to linux, but i don't need this. I'm very new at linux, but like the look n feel (modifiable...?). so I wont even test this, hate windows look and... well just hate windows (and evil m*crosoft ofcourse).

Guys.. We ALL hate M$ so much, we ALL want to get Windows off our entire list of users PC's, Linux and KDE interface is clearly SUPERIOR, GREAT, FUN, EXCITING, ETC... But our users DON'T KNOW ANYTHING ELSE!!!, I prefer to start installing linux boxes with this Windows theme that having to mantain Windows XP in those computers. Many of my users will never note the difference, because in XP they only open telnet terminals by double clicking a desktop Icon.. That will be exactly what they'll have but I'll be running Linux instead of XP. This theme is GREAT for this kind of projects... Of course after some time using Linux and KDE, I will be able to change this theme to more stylish ones :)... The importance of this theme(form many awful) is that is the key step to take users to Linux without complaints ... se what I mean??? The theme is GREAT!!!, keep working on this one, because I'll give many of us administrators the chance to "convert" many users to linux JEJEJE. Greetings from Mexico Augusto

There is a small bug in the size of one of the pics that makes up the Ice-WM theme. To fix it simply go to the control panel and open up the window decorations section. Then click on Ice-WM and then the configure tab. Click on the link that will open Konqorer. Open the pixmaps folder and find the folder called XP and then open the file menuButtonA.xpm with gimp. Right click and select Scale Image from the Image menu. Scale the image to at least 27 pixels wide. Then reload the theme and it will get rid of the garbage. Repeat for the XPmetal folder except make it 26 pixels wide.

How dare you damage the honor of Linux by Soiling her face with the markings of microsoft!

looks okay, but i must tell you windows sucks, the windows gui sucks, and a stable version of windows has yet to exist. Windows XP is supposed to be stable. Windows slowly disintegrates until it implodes and stops working (assuming it ever did). It a) ruins your hard drive. b) renders your machine unbootable c) attempts to upgrade itself with bugfixes that only add new bugs d) permits programs to reveal your personal stuff to others. e) crashes f) does something that causes you to bang your head on a hard object until you suffer a concussion severe enough to render you unconcious, then you come to, throw the computer off a high rise, and proceed to jump after it. I should know. About 1 in 2 to 1 in 5 times i use windows, i come across some error/crash/lockup/nuisance that i feel should not be there. now the windows control panel won't work. i have to search for the cpl files to change anything. it used to be you could just reinstall windows, but it doesn't work that way anymore. Pretty much now, you either find a new OS (not a "new" version of windows) Most unixs are better than windows, though some didn't turn out. (m$ even made "Xenix", which didn't make it, and next step didn't make it either) but linux is currently the most rapidly growing operating system in the world, in users, not size, as is windows (oh yeah, its a big bloat of code. the hundreds of meg required for windows can be replaced with a superior operating system on a superior filesystem.) in the same space even a basic windows xp copy takes, you can install a reasonable distro of linux, with a bunch of extra software. maybe i should shut up and jump off the building again.

Are there actually any errors/crashes/lockups/nuisances that you feel should be there?

It is really sad that this is the most downloaded theme/style.. If you want to look like a Windoze machine... get one... don't insult the Linux 'world' with Bill Gate$ dirty hands on a Linux box... ACK.. This is lame...

gregjohnson

thank you, a much appreciated contribution the vast majority of non technical users want familiar user interfaces to maintain their learning investment if your interest is in building critical mass for linux/kde on the desktop, then this is a significant aid to transition. i'll bet that the vocal complainers have never achieved anything or made any contribution of their own ever. thanks again

Kleggas

Why does 90 percent of all kde users here do nothing else but complain? and u who claim that kde don't need a xp theme what do you know? who are you to tell people what theme they need or not. there are people out there downloading this theme and liking it. so please grow up and do your own "better" theme. must say this theme is great

TKAPPA

nice indeed..but who need windows stuff??? Why should we install something that reminds us the buggiest virus of the universe?? PALLADIUM/TCPA IS EVIL!!!!

Linux WILL NEVER take over the desktop from Windows. Linux users are the rudist people I have ever had to deal with. Haven't met one yet that could give me a straight answer to a question and they can't do anything without a damn command line. TALK ABOUT OUTDATED! I quit using command line with Win30. As for theme designs, I haven't seen a single KDE or Gnome theme that was clean or easy to use. Most are tacky, over done, hard to look out, bad contrast, and with icons so confusing I don't see how anyone can decipher them. With the latest EULAs from Redmond, I have started look for an alternative. Linux ain't it. It's not even CLOSE for full time desktop use for the masses.

whitshade

First of all, not all Linux users are rude. Check out Computing.net. These Linux users are eager to help out anyone who needs it. Secondly, I used to think Linux was the ultimate OS and would one day (hopefully) bury Windoze. After using it for 8 months, I realize that it's not for everyobe, especially someone new to computers. It very powerful, stable and secure. For the average user though, it's like buying a tractor with a bucket and backhoe, when all you really need is a ride-on lawn mower with a cart and snow-blower attachment. No, I don't think it's for everyone. Assess your needs and do some research and you'll find an OS that's right for you.

Sorry! It may be good work, but I get sick when I look at it! I HATE THIS WINDOWS SHIT!!! Why does nobody make a theme like xcfe_smooth (GNOME 2)??? Anyway good work! Pat

elgore

it looks nice but how i can make this xp-menu in the bottem of the screen?

alex

If you want to chage the "start" icon of kde3 you can edit the "icon" line in ..kde3/share/applnk/Settings/Personalization/kcmsmserver.desktop Bye :)

alex

ops... I'm not sure now... :-p

sparkplug

Why do people continue to try and make Linux a Windows clone? Window$ completely sucks, I abohr it, it's a piece of junk, nothing more than clumsy patches and extensions for an 8-bit operating system that was poorly rewritten in a computer language (b.a.s.i.c.) that didn't make sense to begin with, I'm tired of people trying to make Linux windows, this theme is just another piece of crap for those who miss that hunk of junk from Redmond,

rperez

Why is it that when I install the theme it changes the icons but uses the wrong background picture and does not change the toolbar?

stevebob

This is sick.

stevebob

This is sick.

somebody who wants KDE look like WIN XP should better use Windos and not Linux. Does somebody think we can immprove linux by applying Redmond things??? Anyway I appreciate the work which was done by making the theme but we do not need it really in Linux.ThenX so far

WinterWolf

Good Job! I love fooling my family with Linux. My mom didn't even notice it was Linux until I told her. She was jsut browsing with Netscape 6.2.2 and hert askbar had automatic hide. I also made the mouse look white. :) I wish that the makers of Luna and this theme would get together to make a completely identical XP theme so I can really fool everybody and nobody can say that the XP GUI looks better or feels better than KDE.

jackqu

I've found the answer to a) the taskbar question b) the virtual desktop question The answer to a) is: 1) follow the steps in one of the above posts to change the K logo to the windows logo. 2) save that file in your home dir 3) open up the kde control center and choose look n feel->panel->look & feel 4) uncheck 'enabled' on i) Application launcher tiles ii) Window list tiles iii) Quickbrowser tips iv) Legacy Application launcher tiles v) Desktop Access Tiles 5) Check 'enable background image' on background image 6) click browse and find the dir in which you extracted the theme. in this dir is the file bar.png, select it. 7) click apply 8) you're done! To b) simply do the following: on the taskbar to the right of the virtual desktop gadget are some vertical dots, right click these and choose remove. Hope this helps, Jack Saunders
