Description:
This is an attempt to create a more modern looking icon for the best editor (application) ever.
The aim was to be absolutely faithful to the original gVim icon, so I just made it truecolor, warked on the colours and added some translucency.
I don't know wether this is Crystalized or not, but Crystal is the iconset I'm using and these icons fit well with it, so ...
In the tarball you will find png(s) and also .xcf and _semiflattened.xcf files for each resolution.
The .xcf(s) have all the layers, while the _semiflattened.xcf(s) have fewer layers, so you can just play with adjusting translucency and so on.

Thanks to Bob, you will also find ico files to use these icons with Windows.

Have fun, and please improve on the idea and/or give suggestions

2002-10-24: Very good news! these icons are now part of the Crystal theme, from version 0.72 Thanks a lot Everaldo!

Last changelog:

2002-10-24 - (version 1.4) - Thanks to Bob who did the conversion, now there are also ico files to be used with Windows.

2002-10-21 (later) - (version 1.3) Added 64x64 and 128x128 icons.

2002-10-21 - (version 1.2) Added a 16x16 icon.
Modified the install script so that it also creates symlinks for vim.png.

2002-10-20 (later) - (version 1.1) As suggested by Deviant, I've removed the outline and enhanced the shadows to make the icons more Crystal-like. As the 32x32 icon would look too blurry otherwise, I've reduced the translucency effect on it (while enancing it for the 48x48 icon), but you can play around with the .xcf and accomplish your translucent will

2002-10-20 - (version 1.0) Initial release

At last someone has taken a step to rescue the Vim project from the quicksands of banality! I love Vim; I just haven't ever understood why they've chosen such a boring icon to represent them. It looks like some early nineties Win32 app. This is a great icon -- but I'd also like to see you (or anyone) take a stab at a totally new flavor of icon. Maybe the Vim team would even adopt it ...?

Vim has a history, and is part of the history of editing and programming. I think it is good to have an icon that recalls this background of experience, rather than a (maybe) nicer but more detached one. Daniele

good job!!!!

Such an honour! I'm glad you like it, I'm working on the 64x64 and 128x128 too. Daniele

These are cute! Thanks. I happen to think they go well with the ikons theme, too.

And you would need a shadow under the main icon as well... :)

It looks like it is in style of the crystal icons. But to look at the consistancy, it would fit better with the iKons pack. Why? Because of the black outline on the text. For the most, only icons from the standard KDE theme, or from iKons, have black outlines. It looks great, but it would be in better style of crystal if you had no outline, and added a shadow under the text instead.
