Description:
LyX is a document processor that encourages an approach to writing based on the structure of your documents, not their appearance.

LyX is for people that write and want their writing to look great, right out of the box. No more endless tinkering with formatting details, 'finger painting' font attributes or fuzzing around with page boundaries. You just write. In the background, Prof. Knuth's legendary TeX typesetting engine makes you look good.

On screen, LyX looks like any word processor; its printed output -- or richly cross-referenced PDF, just as readily produced -- looks like nothing else. Gone are the days of industrially bland .docs, all looking similarly not-quite-right, yet coming out unpredictably different on different printer drivers. Gone are the crashes 'eating' your dissertation the evening before going to press.

LyX is stable and fully featured. It is a multi-platform, fully internationalized application running natively on Unix/Linux and the Macintosh and modern Windows platforms.

NOTE: Please use the project's mailing lists and tracker for bug reports and feedback.

I downloaded and compiled the source with success. On browsing ftp site I took notice a patch file with the same date as the main program. What does it contain? Do I have to compile?

jspitzm

The patch is just a diff against the previous release. Instead of downloading the whole source, you can just download the patch and apply it on the source of the previous release (or study the changes in detail, if you're interested).

epsilom

thanks, this program is great, good work

mfg

Is there anywhere in Lyx it is possible to keep track of all the signs (incl. spaces) in the document? I need this for writing my university papers where they require info on exact sign amounts. If this hasn't been implemented, would it be hard to include in the next version?

jspitzm

Character count isn't implemented yet, only word count. It isn't hard to implement, but nobody volunteered until now.

skrammel

I need this too. Is it possible to implement using tex commands?

I love LyX as a writing environment. My only complaint is that the Save/OpenFile dialogs look absolutely out of place, regardless of whether you're running KDE or GNOME. In fact, they look like they're designed to match the Windows dialogs instead...

1.4.3 is not currently listed. The Changelog hasn't been updated to include 1.4.3. Knowing that LyX 1.5 under development is targeted with Qt4 I does LyX 1.4.3 actually target Qt2 and not Qt3 frameworks to build against?

mdriftmeyer

Qt4 I does == Qt4, does

jspitzm

It certainly builds against Qt3 (which is recommended), but in 1.4, compatibility back to Qt2 is kept (this is because there is no official free Qt3 version for windows). In LyX 1.5, Qt2 support will be dropped, because Qt4 is supported.

Ark Linux packages have been updated to 1.4.2 -- Ark Linux users simply apt-get install lyx Others in need of RPMs may want to try http://arklinux.osuosl.org/dockyard-devel/SRPMS/lyx-1.4.2-1ark.src.rpm http://arklinux.osuosl.org/dockyard-devel/i586/lyx-1.4.2-1ark.i586.rpm

Is Unicode support planned? It's not so convenient to be limited to whatever language you choose + English.

jspitzm

unicode support is planned and already under development as the main goal of the next major release (1.5).

Meant 1.4.2

jspitzm

which archive did you download? Did you unpack it? It certainly contains a configure file.

dovidhalevi

I just downloaded the 1.4.2.tar.gz file. There is no configure on either directory.

I made some 2D and 3D icons for Lyx. http://www.kde-look.org/content/show.php?content=15961 At first I made this just for me, but I just want to have your opinion. Thx Raph

jspitzm

please post them to lyx-devel@lists.lyx.org.

Exigentsky

I like your icons, I think they are an improvement over the standard. Do you think you could make some new icons for the program itself, those old open, TeX, save etc. icons would certainly benefit from some new artwork.

aledie

Improvement over standard? Actually there are new Lyx icons for the at the Lyx-dev page, which look nice and match KDE not bad. i think they will appear in the new version 1.4. And your lyx will look just like this: http://www.lyx.hu/news/ For now, since they are still not in 1.3.6 you can just download them from http://www.lyx.org/cgi-bin/viewcvs.cgi/lyx-devel/lib/ and put into your HOME/name/.lyx/images folder and you have a much nicer looking lyx interface.
