Description:
KPlayer is a KDE multimedia player.

With KPlayer you can easily play a wide variety of video and audio files and
streams using a rich and friendly interface compliant with KDE standards.

Features include
- video, audio and subtitle playback from file, URL, DVD, VCD,
audio CD, TV, DVB, etc., as well as KDE I/O Slaves;
- volume, contrast, brightness, hue and saturation controls;
- zooming, full screen and fixed aspect options;
- status and progress display and seeking;
- multimedia library to organize your media files and streams;
- configuration dialog and file specific options;
- KPart for integration with Konqueror, KMLDonkey, etc.

The new 0.7 version brings KPlayer into the KDE 4 age. It has been ported to KDE 4 APIs, including Solid. There are currently no plans to use Phonon, since MPlayer is the only backend KPlayer uses. Some polishing has been done, primarily to make KPlayer window resizing smoother. And as usual there have been many bug fixes and translation updates.

Debian packages are available thanks to Christian Marillat.
Set up the repository unless you already have it in your sources.list:

echo 'deb http://www.debian-multimedia.org unstable main' >> /etc/apt/sources.list

Update the package list and install MPlayer, KPlayer, libdvdcss and codecs if applicable.

apt-get update
apt-get install mplayer kplayer kplayer-doc libdvdcss w32codecs

Pleas update screenshots, I bet that KPlayer ported to KDE4-oxygen looks much better :) More "newbie" people will download this apps than.

I am using Ubuntu 7.04, compile kplayer 0.6.2 myself. Install successfully with sudo checkinstall. However, just like mplayer, the slidebar doesn't work. I tried Kaffeine, mplayer, xine and kplayer and kmplayer, only kmplayer's slidebar work (partly work actually, only could scroll the slidebar, but not click to the position I want to watch). This is my computer's problem? Or am I missing some files?

manudwarf

I wanted to know what engine do you use : MPlayer, vlc, other...

kiriuja

MPlayer.

estevam

Don't show subtitles! I'd like to see my favorites series (heroes, lost, smallvillw) in kplayer, not more in mplayer.

kiriuja

Could you please explain what you mean? Or send me a link to a file that I can try for myself. If the file has embedded subtitles that are displayed automatically, you can turn them off on the Player/Subtitles submenu.

estevam

I have some videos in .avi/.mpeg and a subtitles .ssa/.srt: mplayer shows ok, by kplayer don't. I don't known why (in Player/Subtitles is on to load all types). I tried File/Load Subtitile, but doesn't work too... I'm using openSUSE 10.2 64bits (kde 3.5.6) with kplayer rpm in 64bits from guru.

kiriuja

Hmm... I guess it's time to open a bug then. Over here please: http://kplayer.sourceforge.net/manual/howto-bug-reporting.html I am mostly interested in the console output from KPlayer.

estevam

I'll talk with Guru to make a version of kplayer with debug option enable to make a good debug to you.

kiriuja

I've looked at the link you posted the other day http://linux01.gwdg.de/~pbleser/rpm-navigation.php?cat=/Multimedia/kplayer and I see some kplayer-debuginfo-0.6.1 packages on there. Maybe that is what you are looking for?

kiriuja

File/Load Subtitles works fine, but the Player/Subtitles menu was not enabled initially right after you loaded subtitles. This is fixed in KPlayer 0.6.2.

KPlayer is nice and I use it very often - however, there's one thing you should work on. It creates two regular entries in the KDE-optionsmenu (even when there is no mediafile in the directory) plus 5 (!) entries in the 'actions'-submenu... I know it's easy to remove them, but still you should consider not including all of them. Still: good work, keep it up!

estevam

Yes, change this! Too much entries...

kiriuja

Well it is true that those things are much easier to remove than to add them manually, that is the main reason I put them all on there. Unfortunately Konqueror will always show them on a directory no matter what's in that directory. In the future we can have a nice little interface for adding and removing those entries easily. But for now if enough people complain I can remove some of them of course. Which ones do you think should stay? Let's have a vote... I vote for Play definitely, maybe Queue also. I don't care much about the other ones. What do you think?

estevam

Only play... just the basic.

747419

My vote would be: get rid of all of them - I have 9 different movie-players (don't ask me about it...) and none of them appears in neither the basic nor the 'actions'-submenu by default. The 'play'-option is already represented in the 'open with'-submenu, so why create the same one again? Also, qeueing can be done via KPlayer itself. As I said, no other movie-player sets up special menu-entries, so KPLayer shouldn't do so too. To me it appeared way too obtrusive before I removed them.

anupamsr

Here is my opinion: 1. Keep them added! 2. Add an option, very visible, to disable them. I know it gets annoying to have so many entries in the menu, but it is also the way "common" people like. It is a usability issue and people migrating from Windows expect to find the application in the context menu. It actually makes sense! How else a newbie is going to find every application, given the sheer number of programs KDE default install gives you, with every distro adding their own bit of categories.

kiriuja

I think I agree with this solution. It should satisfy most people: newbies will have all the actions available to them, and more advanced users will be able to hide some or all of them if they want to. It won't be a high priority change, so it may take a while to add that option.

This kubuntu package not working ubuntu edgy.. libfontconfig1 2.3.2-7ubuntu2 < 2.4.0 libpng12-0 1.2.8rel-5.1ubuntu0.1 < 1.2.13-4 libqt3-mt 3:3.3.6-3ubuntu3 < 3:3.3.7

estevam

Where're opensuse 10.2 rpms?

kiriuja

It seems there are no suse packages, and also no information on how to ask for them. The overall impression is that after the recent fiasco anything suse is kinda deprecated. Maybe time for a switch?

estevam

10.1 was a fiasco, but 10.2 is great. I don't understand why guru and packman didn't make a rpm. Pls, talk with them.
