evonotify requires the perl modules "Gnome2::Wnck" and "Gtk2::TrayIcon" to run.
in debian these are provided by libgnome2-wnck-perl and libgtk2-trayicon-perl.

it comes with a neat installer which installs and sets up
everything as needed.
notification text and sound are configurable.
