well , distribution is gentoo
i first started with XGL gentoo wiki guide. it was really easy
there is a xgl overlay for gentoo , that makes it very easy and up to date ( i use the cvs ebuilds ) ( http://gentoo-wiki.com/HOWTO_XGL )
but debian , ubuntu and others are up to date also , with rpms and debs ( check http://www.compiz.net )
