Description:
Report from the KDE cvs front:

Hello, I thought I'd make some screenshots of latest KDE cvs from HEAD for all of you who just can't live on the bleeding edge :-)

The screenshots on the left contain a number of new programs and features that may be featured in the upcoming KDE 3.2+. Note: 3.2 is still under heavy development and I have no way of assuring that these programs, features and styles will make it in, but I think it is fair to say that a number of them will.

The first screenshot shows the new KDE PIM environment, Kontact. This should be available in 3.2 and although it is not finished it is looking very nice. The picture also contains Kopete which should become a main KDE program in 3.2. Look to the borders of the screenie and you'll see the fruits of the Slicker project in full bloom. This is not a mock-up ... it is the actual working software in cvs

The second screenshot is showing off the new and improved KDevelop and Quanta development tools. Quanta is getting WYSIWYG support and this will hopefully be ready for 3.2. KDevelop has the Kopete project loaded and you can see how far this project has come.

Ok, here is the specs: The software is from the various CVS repositories of 3/23/03. The color scheme is Modern System 1 with a few slight modifications. The style is clee's excellent DotNET style and the win deco is MkUltra. I've modified Konq so the UI is more in line with the Safari interface.

I think you can see that we have many things to look forward to in the upcoming release

Cheers,

Adam

Update: As Ph0nk has pointed out Slicker is not in KDE's cvs. I'm sorry if that was misleading. For what it's worth I like it, but I don't see it as a replacement for kicker, but rather an addition for some. I think it is good stuff though :-)

this is by far the best screen shot I have ever seen of a KDE desktop. Its simple and clean. No funky shadows or 3-D shapes. just simplicity. Its easier on the eyes than most of the styles that exist for KDE.

Ugly !!!

hi, i would like to see a standard 3.2(cvs) compilation/installation. and about Slicker i can say, till now, the look seems not very nice, maybe just the "startmenu" is a little bit nice with it's picture on the top.. in my opinion, the usual kicker is already nice, but it needs some enhancements. i already read in cvs-digest, that pixmaps/icons now all have a transparent background. Actually the Clock applet needs some enhancements too: the Date is showing the background-pixmap of Kicker, that behavior should also be available for the Time/Clock-View. till now, it is only colorizeable :/

Thanks for moving it to the screenshots section :-)

No problem man. I wasn't trying to piss anyone off I just wanted to show off some of the exciting stuff in HEAD and some of the other projects which everyone is looking at. The screenshots contain all the latest bleeding edge software including the Quanta WYSIWYG part that is not possible to install in stable. Likewise, I tried to highlight apps and stuff that is not currently provided with stable, but *might* be included in 3.2+. This way people who can't or don't have access to the latest stuff can get an idea for where everyone is at and what might be coming up.

KDE has became very fast and stable. Moreover, It begins to be original ! Congratulations all !

First of al, could you please move it to the screenshots sections before I rate it down? Thanks Second, slicker is not in 3.2 cvs and might not even get it there, so dont mislead people. Appart from that, you're not showing anything new to people... so what's the reason for this posting? (appart from showning off your desktop)

Ok, sorry, there's something new that one cannot find for kde 3.1.1: gideon. The rest of things are fairly easy to be installed in the current stable version (even kontact)

really great! but, the icons in - kmail/kontakt for inbox, sendmessage etc are terrible! - i really dislike the blue forward/back/reload buttons anyway. this are peanuts. kde really rocks!

WinterWolf

that Slicker's kard desk software will make it in 3.2 (it will probably be mature enough by that time), while I like slicker, I really just LOVE Kicker + card desk, IMO this is the ultimate combination. Card desk rocks, hopefully more eyecandy willl be added to the cards such as shadows though it still looks decent.

WinterWolf

I rated it "bad" because it should go in screenshots section.

What is card desk dude?? I am new to KDE enhancement stuff. I have been seing those cards on screenshots but i can't find them! i searched on kde-look.org for card desk and it couldn't find anything??

Ph0nK

AFAIK (and I use kde-cvs constantly) slicker is not in KDE cvs. While it's a cool concept, it's still really new and needs lots of work (keep up the good work guys). Kopete is planned on going in to kdenetwork for KDE 3.2, if you're not running this yet, please give it a try (I work mainly on the Oscar/AIM code for Kpoete). -Ph0nk
