I came across the same problem,
which affects gkrellm with its
default skin as well as other apps
such as xmms with shaped skins.
My solution is to issue the command
"dcop kwin KWinInterface reconfigure"
after starting the application.
I think it is a bug in kwin.
This works for my old KDE 2.2.1,
I don't know how this works in KDE3.
Good luck

Good idea, but not as readable as I would like. I am using the r9x theme with Keramik now. It has better contrast and is much more readable.
Nice gkrellm skin.. So, where did you get the background?
oops.. guess that's what happens when I miss checking on kde-look for a day or two. :)
