Description: regimp is a container ("parent") application for gimp 1.3. Don't use gimp because you hate to minimize and restore all those windows seperately? Don't use gimp because it clutters up your taskbar? Maybe this could be a solution.Last changelog:
First release. Quick hack without any KDE/Linux programming experience. Don't expect too much. I find it quite helpful though and want to share it.
The program's name is now "regimp3". Here is a link to the new page:

I haven't tried building it yet so I don't know whether it works with Gimp 2.
X Windows.
Why not just put gimp on its own desktop.
Then you dont have to bother with minimising it all the time.
I have 4 desktops running.
1. Chat Software
2. gIMP
3. Internet browsers and FTP stuff
4. Any other progs like Koffice and stuff.
This has worked for me for the last 2 years and I use this at work.
Nice idea but pointless.
just my little bit

You're right man, what you mention will do for most cases.
What really bothers me about GIMP is that huge palette windows (layers, channels, etc). Are the developers almost blind or what? or perhaps they have super powered boxes running at 2000x1500 resolution! :(
I, too, think they should learn a lot about Photoshop in terms of user interface and usability in general. Also, users should have the possibility to dock the palettes to the sides ( a la Dreamweaver MX, OpenOffice, etc.), that would be great!
Uhm, I was all excited about this, but it doesn't seem to work correctly. The only thing it seems to do is minimize the gimp toolbox when you minimize the regimp window. It doesn't minimize the image windows or any of the dialogs. Is this correct? I would assume not, since that would make this rather useless.
Well, it's version 0.1.
Sorry for the bugs.
The point is:
It only recognizes windows
which contain the word GIMP
somewhere in their title.
You can change that for
the image windows in the
preferences. Toolboxes
are (at least in the version
I use) called "GIMP Dock 1,2"
and so forth.
I've yet to find out a better
method to decide whether a
window belongs to GIMP.
To all KDE/XLib experts out there:
Is there a way to determine
which process a window belongs to?
Never mind. I think I've just
figured it out. Strange: I was
searching ages for it but
the minute after I asked here,
I found the solution myself.
Anyway, I'm currently trying
to make an improved version
which really reparents the
windows, making it work much
better. I will try to add
the new process id to that version.
It's a very nice hack, but I think I'll wait some more and then will start to using it. It isn't funny, when you click the window and the main gimp window disappears. :)
But very nice job, hope you'll develop it more.. :)
I think this is a religious question: Do you prefer multiple Windows or just one Window?
For people coming from the Windows world, one Window might be the better solutions.
But people that are used to the Mac might prefer the traditional Gimp.
Well, I like the traditional Gimp, because I do not have one big window that occupies my desktop and hides other applications. However apps like Gimp are much more usable, if you set the focus policy to 'focus follows mouse'. And then multi-window apps require 'real' window managers like enlightenment, not such things like kwin with limited functionality.
i'm just responding to those who say that this hould'nt be done -- this really should. this is a fantastic idea for people like web esigners who switch from app to app all the time. i found it frustrating to have 8 gimp windows to select after previewing a webpage :) -- this doesn't change the UI at ALL, it just makes it cleaner for those who want it that way -- no i /would/ like to see those menubars from 1.3 up on top of re-gimp, bt i assume that mst be tough.
this is excellent work. thanks alot!
nice work, but I think gimp don't need this kind of gui. Everytime I have to do something with windows & Painshop/Photoshop I could scream. I think the gimp gui is _really_ productive if you know how to use it (and I'm just a gimp-beginner...)
so long,

I think it is a wonderful idea!
I did not bother to learn how to use gimp untill recently because many uncontained windows were driving me nuts!!!
For distros for newbies like mandrake should have this by default!
...Why not? I mean, the whole purpose of GIMP is to serve as a Photoshop replacement -- so anything that makes it more user-friendly in terms of new linux converts can't be a bad thing. Besides, this just looks cool, too -- I mean, why hasn't anyone ever done this before?
I respect your work, but i think, that the gimp don't need a container. I think, that the gimp shouldn't copy the entire gui concept from photoshop. I dont need a good looking ui, but a good functional program, wich can be used to work with it. As a newbie the gui isn't easy, but if you read the docs a bit, the gui is more powerfull than some expensive grafic manipulation program.
Don't knock a idea just because it doen't suit your needs. Remember choice is what Gnu/Linux is all about. Some of us have been raised on other os's and get accustomed to things being one way. It's not wrong to want to make things like they were on other os's. Just look at all the mac/beos/windows look-a-like thems on this site.
COME ON... what's with that weird upper-left hand arrow instead of a menubar? And ALL THOSE FREAKING WINDOWS... workspace clutter is the main reason I DON'T use a Mac.
The GIMP people need a serious lesson in usability... but then again the GNOME attitude in general is "we're geeks, if you're not, well then tough." 'Nuff said.
Haven't tried it yet, but that is exactly what is needed! when this matures I can finally tell people at work that Linux actually has a paint-solution.
Are you serious? It just make the Gimp look more like a ms-windows app. There is no new fonctionnality. Anyway I see the point of the container. But the comment wasn't very kind to gimp developpers. Cheers. Dany-CL

Oh BTW: On Linux you have multiple Desktops. Use them ;-)

As a feature it would be nice to boost migration.
This is really cool, but the link isnt working now. Great work, can't wait to try it out.
Good work :) thx
I'll downlaod this as soon as I get home, it looks fantastic. Good stuff :-)
