And it's another thing that proves anything Wind'ohs can do, Linux can do just as well (or better). Nice one :-)
If you fail to see the point, then it's your loss. Frankly I really like the look I get from Winblows users when they see my Laptop boot up with my Linux boot splash themes. That look of "there's something I've never seen before" warrants tons more splash screens.
I now fail to see the point of pretty boot splashes as my system is up for ages at a time and reboots are rare occurrences. I only reboot for kernel changes and the occasional one forced on me by a power glitch. It's some 13 days now since my last reboot and that was for a kernel update via suse's YOU
There are numerous reasons for them, just as long as theres ways to disable them via kernel parameters or /etc/sysconfig like SuSE's. One reason from the top of my head, do we really want new users to Linux staring at a bunch of services being loaded (sometimes failing) or a graphical progress bar? Hide the details of implementation and just get the user where he wants to go. Just give the regulars the option to disable it. Oh, and: 12:34pm up 74 days, 22:30, 2 users, load average: 0.07, 0.02, 0.00. Loads are low because the machine is too fast. ;)
isn't it time you applied some important kernel updates??? and call that a load average? pah... 10:01pm up 14 days 1:08, 1 user, load average: 2.10, 1.73, 1.28 850mhz duron chugging along fine fully responsive despite the load...
What for? Thats a sparc machine acting as a CVS server for quite a few projects. It handles itself very well. Oh and that duron - replace it with an athlon 64 you no longer have to "feel" responsive - it always is. ;)
