gimpCopy
Source (link to git-repo or to original if based on someone elses unmodified work):
Description:
I often find myself opening a file in the GIMP only to copy it to a new file and close the original. This adds an option to the Actions menu for all image mimetypes to achieve that same result in one step. Yeah, this is probably completely useless to you, but it's my first service menu and I felt like sharing. :-D
INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS:
After much trial and error, I was unable to make this service menu work when installed to $HOME/.kde/share/services/ServiceMenus, so you'll have to install it system-wide - just copy it to /usr/share/kde4/services/ServiceMenus/
***READ THIS***
The GIMP command-line option that this uses (--as-new) is only available in GIMP 2.3.16 and later, so if yours is any older than that, THIS WON'T WORK. Sorry. :- If you have any suggestions on how this functionality might be implemented without that command-line option, please let me know. Thanks. Last changelog:

I don't understand the usefulness of this. Why don't you simply copy/paste the original file and work on the copy?
Umm... Fewer steps, especially if you don't already have GIMP open. Like I said in the description, I don't expect this to be especially useful for most people.
I was not criticizing. I really wanted to understand why this could be useful. Since it's a Konqueror/Dolphin servicemenu, you already have them open, therefore I can't help but point out that copying/pasting a file should already be a matter of one second. :-)
Thanks so much for this! What a great idea you had...this will definitely come in useful for me as I always use gimp to edit photos, but save the originals unscathed. Thanks again!
Glad you like it, thanks for the kind words.
Hi, I like your idea. But my primary goal is to ask you if it would be possible to get the flames.png which is shown in the screenshot. I would like to use it as kickerbackground. nice regards nighty
You can find that background in the pack located here: http://www.kde-look.org/content/show.php/total+work+pack?content=64870
Quite useful! (ps. very nice kicker wallpaper you opened :D) Michael (maniaco)
Hmm, it doesn't work. It begins to launch gimp but then it closes. I'm on Ark Linux 07.1. If you'd like you can join us on Freenode in #arklinux, so we can work on it. Thanks!
I'll head in there within a day or two when I've got some time. Until then, can you make sure the version of GIMP you're using supports the "--as-new" option?
Invalid option "--as-new" GIMP version 2.2.17 I guess not.
I do the same thing, this is very useful to me! Thank you!
Thanks, glad you like it.
