Description: To everyone waiting for updates of this: there will never be. This plasmoid is a dead end. Instead you should use Grouping Desktop (http://kde-look.org/content/show.php/Grouping+Desktop?content=116926).
This plasmoids lets you group other plasmoids.
To use it simply put it on the desktop or panel, then drop other plasmoids from the add plasmoids dialog or drop an icon from kickoff. The plasmoids will be ordered in a grid. If you put it in a panel you can choose if you want it to stay as it is in the desktop or in a popup that you'll be able to open clicking on a icon.
Warning: you'll need kde from trunk if you want to use it without problems. If you use 4.3 it will work but it won't open the applets you put into it after a plasma restart.
p.s. if you know a good icon for it, please let me know!Last changelog:
What a pity you don't want to continue. The Grouping Desktop cannot replace this widget because you cannot put it into the panel, you cannot use it with the classic desktop etc. :(
Your plasmoid is much more flexible.
This plasmoid has no way to go into KDE, unlike Grouping Desktop.
Surely Grouping Desktop has still limitations, like the panel still missing (why do you say that Grouping Desktop can't be used in the normal desktop? why do you want to do that? what are you missing?).
Anyway on the long run it is the right way to go. It allows more ease of development of different groups, without saying that this Container can't do many things. Try dropping some text on it, it won't create a Note widget like Grouping Desktop, and won't be able to gain many features added in libplasma which Grouping Desktop will get for free.
> why do you say that Grouping Desktop can't be used in the normal desktop? why do you want to do that? what are you missing?
Well, the classic desktop (folderview activity) allows to put files on the desktop. As it is an own activity it cannot be combined with the Grouping Desktop activity.
Hi,
Not sure if you're actively developing this at the moment, but if you get around to it in the future, I think it could be useful to select a user defined icon when used on a panel. If I have more than one container on a panel they all look alike ;)
Thanks for the great plasmoid!
but couldn't you or anybody else make it work with KDE 4.3? The settings will be lost and all contained plasmoids appear outside this plasmoid. Pleeeeease ;-)
love it! finally a possibility to get a multi-row-panel!
can you make it really work with KDE 4.3(.1), please?
fix setting numbers of rows would be an essential feature, I think.
thankful,
will;
it's not possible to make it work properly with 4.3. it would need some work on the insides of plasma or maybe some ugly hack in my code, but i don't think i will do that, even because i don't know how it could be done :P
you define them yourself when you add new plasmoids. if you have put a plasmoid into it and want to put another in another column you drag it on the left or on the right of the first plasmoid, otherwise you drag it on the top or the bottom.
:) i hope it was a good dream!
well, it should be center aligned. right now all the arranging of the items is done automatically by the layout. in the next version i hope you'll be able to resize manually the rows and columns at your will.

ah, i thought you were talking about the normal, default desktop. i hope to be able to find a solution for that in the future.
Hello again, is it working with KDE 4.4.x now? will;
well, currently i'm busy with other things so i'm not working on it. anyway it should work with the latest kde release.

Something like this should be included in a standard installation of KDE
sorry for the stupid question... but how can i install it? can you write a little README file together with the sources. Thx!
me stupid! ok i've found all the info, sry! :D

i know this is a new plasmoid, but could you add the ability to define the number of columns & rows? thanks for developing this plasmoid.

i'm aware of that. i was just wondering if you could add the feature to "hardcode" colums & rows because the current behavior is inconsistent.
i don't know that. currently i'm not developing this, but when i'll have some time it could be
Good plasmoid! Why his name is "Cornice" and here "Container"? This is not a good idea to retrieve website from the plasmoid name :(
cornice was a temporary name. i forgot to change that in the .desktop file
Kool, I dreamed with this yesterday. It can be used as a Sidebar, if the stuff inside can be centered-aligned.

Maybe one of distribute-*-*.png from Oxygen actions group? Or insert-table.png?
i don't know... i don't like them so much
Yes, they are not perfect but sometimes it is hard to find something to reuse...
Good idea, thanks for sharing your work :)
